Srinagar, Jul 23 (KNO): The Government of Jammu and Kashmir is in the process of formulating an Eco-Tourism Policy, which is expected to be finalized and notified within six months.
The Department of Tourism has informed the Assembly Secretariat that it is actively engaged in drafting the policy. “The Department is actively engaged in formulation of the Jammu & Kashmir Eco-Tourism Policy, which aims to establish a comprehensive framework for conservation of natural resources, sustainable utilization of eco-sensitive areas, regulation of tourism activities based on carrying capacity, promotion of community participation, and creation of sustainable livelihood opportunities for local communities,” reads a detailed reply submitted by the Department of Tourism, as per news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO).
The government further stated that the policy is being finalized after extensive consultations with stakeholders. “The draft Eco-Tourism Policy is being finalized after detailed consultation with all concerned stakeholders including Tourism Development Authorities, line departments, environmental experts, local communities, tourism industry representatives, and other relevant agencies,” the reply added.
According to the Government, the policy will be finalized and notified within six months following completion of the consultation process and approval of the competent authority.
In the reply, the Department maintained that it is committed to promoting sustainable, responsible, and environment-friendly tourism, while maintaining a balance between tourism development and preservation of the fragile ecological resources of the Union Territory.
